Human Rights defenders Jani Silva and padre Alberto Franco from Colombi are coming to the Netherlands. Lots of reasons to organize the sixteenth edition of the Human Rights Café.
Jani Silva is legal representative of the Amazon Integral Sustainable Development Association (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral Sostenible Perla Amazón – Adispa), and is also the supervisor of the Puerto Asis Human Rights Committee. Her work involves defending the human and environmental rights of communities affected by the operations of oil companies in the area. Jani has been threatened and harassed by illegal armed groups and private actors operating in the region as a result of her work.
Padre Alberto Franco has experienced these threats as well, being the legal representative and executive secretary of the Inter-Church Justice and Peace Commission (Comisión Intereclesial de Justicia y Paz – CIJP). The CIJP provides integral accompaniment in the processes of rural, indigenous, Afro-Colombian and mixed communities, who defend their rights in a non-violent manner, and are located in areas affected by the armed conflict and areas where human and environmental rights violations have occurred in the context of the implementation of large scale development projects.
