Utrecht introduces the new Shelter City guest: Lottie Cunningham Wren! With her non-profit organisation CEJUDHCAN (Center for Justice and Human Rights of the Nicaraguan Coast), Lottie advocates for the rights of the indigenous and afro-descendant peoples of Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast. Through her implementation of strategic litigation, Lottie has worked to protect the collective human rights of indigenous peoples. Although she did become victim of direct threats, defamation and harassment, she did not allow this to decrease her determination to defend the rights of indigenous people. Her perseverance has led to big achievements in natural resource rights, the indigenous territories and their self-determination as codified in territorial law at the regional, national and international level.
Her stay in the Shelter City Utrecht will give her the opportunity to continue her work in a safe environment, raise awareness and strengthen her professional network. For more information go to the Shelter City website.
